The Wolsztyn steam locomotive depot is the only one in Europe, and probably even in the world, still active, from which steam locomotives are nearly daily dispatched to operate scheduled passenger trains, most often running on the route from Wolsztyn to Poznań, Leszno, or Zbąszyn. It is also the only place where you can see consistently functioning workshops, machines and equipment, as well as other technical facilities used for the maintenance and repair of steam locomotives. This is not an open-air museum or museum created to display steam locomotives and their facilities, but a true steam locomotive depot that has been active for over 100 years. Only here can you see a hot, steaming steam locomotive almost every day.
Wolsztyn is located at the junction of several railway lines in 5 different directions. Each of them represents significant historical value with supraregional importance. Around them, one can admire former Prussian architecture of small stations preserved in their original condition, as well as signal boxes, mechanical semaphores, bridges, and viaducts.
The depot has, among others, the Pm36-2 steam locomotive from 1937, called "Beautiful Helena," as well as the first Polish passenger steam locomotive Ok22-31 from 1929. The depot has 30 steam locomotives and 19 historic carriages, as well as other rail vehicles such as a workshop crane and a snow plow dated 1883. The entire collection is an example of unique heritage in the field of technical history, providing an attraction for visitors of different ages and with various cultural competences.
